  • Waterstop is a key waterproof material used in construction projects to prevent water seepage. It is mainly applied to weak waterproofing areas such as concrete structure joints (such as deformation joints and construction joints), underground projects, and water conservancy facilities ‌. The following are its main classifications and characteristics:

    I. Classification by structure

    Embedded waterstop ‌

    Type 651 ‌ : It features three raised flanges on both sides of the center hole, with a width of 200-700mm and a thickness of 6-20mm. It is widely used in basements, tunnels, etc. ‌.
    Type 652/653 ‌ : It has a stronger deformation capacity and is suitable for parts with significant deformation such as Bridges and DAMS ‌.

    External (back-attached) waterstop ‌

    It is divided into EB type (with holes) and EP type (without holes), with a width of 200-550mm and a thickness of 6-10mm. It is mostly used on the water-facing side of construction joints ‌.

    Steel-edge waterstop ‌

    Embedded metal frame, width 300-500mm, strong tear resistance, suitable for high water pressure environment ‌.
    Ii. Classification by material

    Natural rubber (NR) ‌

    Temperature resistance: -45℃ to 60℃, suitable for freshwater environment ‌.

    Chloroprene rubber (CR) ‌

    Acid and alkali resistant, applicable temperature range: -35℃ to 60℃‌.

    Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) ‌

    Excellent low-temperature resistance, suitable for cold regions ‌.

    Swelling type upon contact with water ‌

    After absorbing water, it expands to fill the gaps. Common specifications: 252×6mm, 452×10mm‌.
    Iii. Application Scenarios

    Underground works ‌ : prevention of groundwater seepage in subways and basements ‌.

    Water conservancy projects ‌ : anti-seepage at joints of DAMS and aqueducts ‌.

    Bridges/buildings ‌ : adapt to temperature deformation and reduce rainwater erosion ‌.

    Iv. Precautions
    When installing, be sure to avoid piercing the waterstop with steel bars or stones ‌.
    The concave side of the steel-edge waterstop should face the water-facing side ‌.
